Fifty years of The Beatles – it’s time for a fab celebration!

WHAT a weekend for Liverpool and Merseyside – and what a day for your Liverpool ECHO!

Today’s souvenir front page, lovingly and skilfully created by Yoko Ono for our readers, gets the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of The Beatles off to a wonderful start.
On August 18, 1962, Ringo Starr performed with the band for the first time – at Hulme Hall, in Port Sunlight, where they were the headline act for the local horticultural society’s 17th annual dance.
It was the modest beginning of what would become a magnificent adventure.
While we should never forget the valuable contribution made by Pete Best beforehand – a man who had an army of admirers during his time in the band – this was the start of the Fab Four, as the world came to know them.
It is, then, a time to celebrate – and reflect.
All these years on, it is easy for Merseysiders to become blasé about The Beatles and take their achievements and legacy for granted – and it is also understandable.
In a sense, we live with The Beatles each and every day. We absorb their impact and their influence but, perhaps, at times, fail to recognise just how important a part they still play in this city’s life.
Countless visitors from countless countries across the planet continue to head to Liverpool to pay homage to the Four Lads Who Shook The World and we benefit greatly from their visits.
Yoko’s gift to Liverpool ECHO readers is a fitting tribute to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr – and a fitting tribute to the city which helped nurture their talents and gave them to the world.
Happy birthday to The Beatles – the band that helped change Liverpool and the world.
